The ghost industry

Burmese migrant workers leave the port

My good friend Chris Kelly has made a stunning, brave and deeply troubling investigation with Kate Hodal into slavery in the Thai fishing industry and how it’s fuelled by Western demand. I won’t say much about it other than it should be watched and read in full here in The Guardian. It’s one of the rare vital and heavyweight pieces of investigative journalism that may have the power to profoundly change things, and open our eyes to how our consumerism is built upon the abject misery of others. If we choose to ignore, we don’t deserve to be protected from the whirlwind we are surely reaping or from the judgement of the victims and future generations who will regard us as cosseted moral savages.
